It is highly welcome that the ban on embryonic stem cell research was lifted. Thankfully you were brave enough to take this decision even when you knew that it would not be taken lightly by the far right evangelists. It is disturbing to see the progress of science being obstructed by the claims of false idealists. These same people would jump up and cheer when thousands of civilians are murdered for the sake of a few business people. Killing is okay to them as long as it is covered in the shroud of war and patriotism. But they would fervently argue the case for the undeveloped stem cells. This is not a case of sympathy or passion for humanity on their part, but a hollow attempt to ensure the survival of their political influence. I felt like the evangelists were in power for the last 8 years because the Bush administration acted as a puppet of the evangelicals, and did their ultra conservative bidding.
I sure hope you will continue on this path and get the space program on track too. Of course there will always be stiff opposition to such a decision (To the Rush Limbaughs of the world, the whole space program is “pork”!). But ultimately, it is a question of whether you are willing to give up a little of your present so that the future may be brighter. You have the mandate of young people who are willing to look beyond the current crises and see the world progressing. The question is, are you brave enough to take the tough decisions?

Of course the Bush administration acted as puppets of Evangelists because Mr. Bush did grow up in Texas, surrounded by evangelists. And that government successfully planted the idea into already conservative American citizens, that America continues to be the most powerful country at least as far as military goes. So in order to get out of the chaos, Obama has some good amount of brainwashing to do.
Last year when they were pulling out the NASA funding for deep space studies, the main proponent argument was that there are millions out there who die out of hunger every minute. (“Is NASA barking up the wrong tree” was the name of the article on space.com) The funny thing was that these well educated people didn’t have any proposals, what so ever, as to how they were going to spend this “saved” money on the people dying in starvation. It’s also hypocritical how, they were arguing on this when America was hardly even going green. America is used to produce food in abundance, and they will continue to waste things regardless. Why do you think ‘freeganism’ was ever created?
And then they tried to justify their statements by saying let’s cut out the “deep space research” not “space research”. So we will reach out from our little dark room to our living room, but not the garden. Ok, so what if the answers, cures and approaches lie in our garden? I say, then cut out everything, because it’s useless to go a mile and give up.
With all due respect, I suggest hiring scientists who can do a simple metric to English Unit conversion. That will be a better way to reduce space project failures
Sounds like President Obama is getting out there with some ethical plans. I didn’t know about this bio-med research. Sparkles my interest though. I guess it’s that time of the century to do something other than praying!
